Marlowe’s

Marlowe’s is a wonderful historical saloon on the 16th Street Mall in Downtown Denver.  They are super friendly and make excellent cocktails.  I can report the steak and the Buffalo burger are worthwhile.

This cranberry sage scrub recipe is from the December Costco connection magazine. It’s very easy to make and quite tasty.  It’s also very cheery for the holiday season.

AquaZinger

Aquazinger

Cucumber slices in the bottom of my Aqua zinger created a truly refreshing water infusion. I have enjoyed such waters at the spa and lovely hotels. The fresh infusions in your own frig is a notch above. Simply add the cucumber or berries or whatever in the bottom and the contents are macerated as the top section is tightened down. It can also be used to make cocktails as well. There are lots of choices but I can suggest the Black Velvet: muddle blackberries fruit or fill the bottom of the Aqua Zinger, top with Absolute Acai vodka and ice.

New Years Resolution Renewed

I have had the same NYE resolution for the past several years – try a new cocktail every month.   It was such a successful resolution that I decided to try it again the following year.  It has morphed in to the search for a top 12 cocktails – enough to make a cocktail of the month calendar.  I have enjoyed the journey and learned a bit.  I have been joined by the overall trend in cocktail renaissance.  However, I still am looking for the a top 12.  I think I might do it this year.  I have help.  I have an adult child who is joining me in the search.  It is a nice hobby for a mother and daughter, right?

SipSip is the nick name she earned as a toddler.  She loved red wine from her first taste and begged for a sip.  Sip. Sip. Sip.  As an adult she we have developed a tradition of new cocktails try-outs at our holiday gatherings.  This Christmas it was an “Old Fashioned” made with Bulleit Bourbon.

I love having an adult child to play with.  She also cooks.

If you have a favorite cocktail, traditional or signature, share it with me and maybe it will become a calendar model for 2015!

Cocktail: Definition by Wikipedia

As I start this blog, I was thinking over my recently travels and my top cocktails in Minneapolis.  I wondered if the the drink I ordered most often last week was really a cocktail at all.  So I did what we all do these days when you want to know about something.  I looked it up on Wikipedia.   “The definition of cocktail on Wikipedia  A cocktail is an alcoholic mixed drink that contains two or more ingredients—at least one of the ingredients must be a spirit.” Cocktails were originally a mixture of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. It now means almost any mixed drink that contains alcohol.  A cocktail today usually contains one or more kinds of spirit and one or more mixers, such as soda or fruit juice. Additional ingredients may be sugar, honey, milk, cream, and various herbs.

My cocktail of the week did have two ingredients – Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and ice.  Simply the best drink choice at any of the receptions I attended.

I was still sticking with the local brew chaser.  The winner was Summit Extra Pale Ale or EPA as the locals in Minneapolis call it.   Finnegan’s Irish Amber was a nice lighter option.

Drink Pink!

Halloween can still have October 31st but the rest of the month belongs to breast cancer awareness. October has turned pink.  Think pink and wear pink and of course now we can drink pink too commission!  Some mixologist are serving up the pink cocktails in order to promote cancer awareness. You might find some of these in San Luis Obispo.  If you don’t have a chance to go to SLO, you might check out pink drink cocktails at home. How about the Rasmopolitan or the Raspberry martini or even the Femme Fatale?  Check out the recipes at The Pink Drink Recipe Book  and let me know what you think.

Cocktails and Glee: American/Americano

Glee season 4 debut this week featured Rachel in New York and Kate Hudson as Rachel’s tormentor (dance teacher). Kate performed American/Americano  America/Americano Glee S4E1

Enjoy the Campari cocktail Americano made with equal parts Campari and sweet Vermouth. Or you can add an additional part Gin to create the Negroni.

If you enjoy the taste of vermouth as I do, you might enjoy the Americano better.  I am still acquiring a taste for gin.
